For what purposes did Lawvere write the paper?

There's nobody guiding my studies, and I don't really have anyone I can ask category theory (not to mention philosophical aspects of it). I am really not reading this paper in relation with any problem and do just want to get an understanding of Lawvere's philosophy. I guess I'm at an impasse for now.
