While I've never asked a question while this confusion persisted, for quite a while (this was many years ago now) I didn't even realize there was a difference between Mathoverflow and Mathematics Stack Exchange. To me they were both the stack exchange website dealing with mathematics. The way I'd usually end up on either of the sites is searching for particular maths questions/subjects through google and end up on one of the sites.
