About

I was Professor in Mathematics in the University of Wales, Bangor, until 2005, when they shut the mathematics department down. (Please do not react by saying 'a university without a maths department! How is that possible?' The answer is 'It is all too easy in some education systems, and the plague continues'.)

Since the closure, I have been, amongst other things, a visiting professor/researcher in Ottawa, Galway, Paris, Granada, and have given numerous workshop and seminar talks (Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona, Cardiff, Luminy, IHP, LiX). I was a CNRS visitor in Lyon (France) working with Philippe Malbos and Yves Guiraud and in autumn 2011, visited the Université de Savoie, Chambery on a research visit. More recently I have visited Granada for four weeks followed by short visits to Logrono and Madrid, the Max Planck Institut for a short visit during the season `Higher structures in geometry and physics' and a research visit to Louvain-la-Neuve. Nearer home I gave a talk at the meeting on `Modelling topological phases of matter' in Leeds, and further afield again visited Logrono for the Métodos Categóricos y Homotópicos en Álgebra, Geometría y Topología. I continue to research in the theory of TQFTs and generally in the areas of homotopy theory and higher dimensional category theory.

I was a member of the program committee for Higher-Dimensional Rewriting and Applications in 2015 and 2016 and continued that role in 2017 and 2018.

I am an `emeritus member' of WIMCS and helped organise a WIMCS related workshop in Cardiff in 2011 on Higher Gauge Theory, TQFTs and categorification. I am a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.
