What is the policy here? Is it always acceptable to temporarily host the file even though it's technically copyright infringement (not that I have a problem with that..)?
I think it would be just nice to know.
Related discussion: are we concerned about people posting illegal material?
I guess, but for example, Bourbaki's chapters 7-9 of "Lie Groups and Lie Algebras" is available behind a pay wall. What is the verdict on posting chapters from books or even whole books?
Another example: Hirschhorn's book on model categories was available for free on his website before the published version came out. I have the pdf from his website. Would it be inappropriate to link that sort of thing.
fpqc- I think the consensus among moderators was that we had no interest in enforcing DMCA proactively. We certainly won't take any action in the absence of a takedown notice from the owner of the material, and i think even then the sense was that that was an issue from whoever was hosting the material, not MathOverflow as a site.
Alright, good to know! Not that it is my intention to abuse it, but it's useful that we don't have to be super careful.
